Understanding and Overcoming Limiting Beliefs
Understanding and overcoming limiting beliefs is a process, and the first step is defining them both. Limiting beliefs are the self-imposed constraints we place on our abilities and potential. They stem from our thoughts, and subsequently morph into what we believe about ourselves. According to the National Science Foundation, our brains can produce as many as 50,000 thoughts per day. That said, it’s easy for negative, self-defeating thoughts to take root. These little voices in your head tell you that you can’t accomplish something or that you’re not good enough. Additionally, they create an internal narrative that keeps you from reaching your true potential.
Why do these limiting beliefs occur?
Because 95% of our thoughts are repeated daily. Think about it. If the thoughts you’re having about yourself are predominantly negative, it’s logical that your your self-confidence would be low. Though your beliefs are often a misguided, they act as a form of self-protection. Unfortunately, the opposite is true. Limiting beliefs don’t protect, they give you a false sense of security by suggesting that avoiding difficult situations, challenges, or potential failures is in your best interest. The truth is, this false protection mechanism is a lie and inhibits your progress. Furthermore, it prevents you from taking risks that could lead to personal growth and success.
Where do limiting beliefs come from
The short answer is in our past experiences. In this video, I share an answer you probably won’t like, but it doesn’t make it an untruth:
Another area limiting beliefs originate are childhood experiences. These particular experiences can definitely leave a lasting impression. Negative feedback from parents, teachers, or peers can shape our self-image in profound ways. Additionally, the media and societal pressures play a significant role. Constant exposure to “perfect” bodies, lavish lifestyles, and overnight success stories can make us feel inadequate and spark a harmful comparison. This “compare despair” response reinforces our limiting beliefs and keeps us from recognizing our unique strengths and potential.
Why It’s Important to Overcome Them
Overcoming limiting beliefs is crucial for unlocking your full potential and living the life you desire. These beliefs can hold you back from pursuing opportunities, achieving goals, and experiencing personal fulfillment. If left unchecked, they can foster a fixed mindset, which assumes that abilities and understanding are relatively static. In contrast, cultivating a growth mindset—the belief that abilities and understanding can be developed—can lead to greater resilience, learning, and achievement.
How to Overcome Them
When you know better, you do better. This makes the first step to overcoming limiting beliefs, self-awareness. Recognize and acknowledge the negative thoughts that hold you back. Once you’re aware of these beliefs, challenge and reframe them. Replace them with positive affirmations and evidence of your past successes. Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage your growth and challenge your self-imposed limitations. With time and effort, you can transform your mindset and break free from the constraints of limiting beliefs.
You may not see your thoughts as limiting beliefs, but if you are feeling unaccomplished, like you’re not ready or good enough, there is a large chance those thoughts are untrue. STOP telling yourself lies and for god sakes… DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!
