Unlocking Goal Achievement:
Mastering Habits, Triggers, and Rewards for Success
If you are interested in unlocking goal achievement, this is the blog post for you! Here’s the thing, setting goals is the easy part; achieving them is where the challenge lies. To understand why our goals often remain unfulfilled, we need to reverse engineer the process by examining habits, triggers, and rewards.
Rewards
Payoff is what we’re all looking for, right? We want our actions to yield a desired result and we want that reward in a timely manner. So, why doesn’t it happen?
When we see something we want and instantly desire it, I call it The Monkey Effect. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “monkey see…monkey do”, right? That’s where I got that description.
It’s not an uncommon occurrence, but it’s often practiced without considering the practicality. We want instant gratification, but reality doesn’t always comply. Additionally, many people fail because they have no concrete plan in place.
Suggestions for Motivational Rewards:
- Attach It to Personal Growth: Find rewards that contribute to your personal development. This creates duplicitous outcomes—you learn and grow, and you’re rewarded for your efforts.
- Make It About the Collective: Tie your rewards to group accountability and social engagement. When others are involved, you’re more likely to stay committed.
- Benefit Others: Sometimes the best reward is seeing someone else happy. If your efforts can drastically benefit someone else, it adds a layer of fulfillment.
Habits
To develop habits that get you closer to what you want out of your life, career, or business, you need to understand the types of habits you’ve already formed and adjust where necessary.
- Constructive Habits: These are habits that result in growth and yield rewards. They push you forward and help you achieve your goals.
- Destructive Habits: These habits prevent growth and can be harmful. They need to be identified and eliminated to make room for more productive behaviors.
- Unproductive Habits: While not necessarily harmful, these habits waste time and energy. They need to be minimized To focus on more constructive activities.
To make lasting changes, you need a personal framework that identifies and modifies these habits.
Triggers
Triggers can prevent you from achieving your goals if you allow them to. To avoid missing out on your goals, you must recognize your triggers and address them.
- Acknowledge Them: The first step is to acknowledge your triggers. Know what sets you off track.
- Avoid Them: Where possible, avoid the triggers that lead to unproductive or destructive habits.
- Action Plan to Manage Them: Develop a plan to manage your triggers. This might involve changing your environment, developing new routines, or seeking support from others.
By understanding the interplay of rewards, habits, and triggers, we begin to see why unlocking goal achievement has been a challenge. It’s easier to see why goals aren’t being met and the steps needed to change that. Setting realistic rewards, fostering constructive habits, and managing triggers can transform the way we approach our goals and ultimately, lead us to success.
