The word on the street is… we have to be ALL IN when we decide to transition or pivot from career to entrepreneurship. Does that seem scary to you? It does me! Jumping off a cliff with no safety net isn’t exactly an appealing thought to me so in this blog post, in addition to the advice in the video above, I wanted to share a few of my own personal branding STARTUP tips. They will help you, consistently and meticulously, eat the proverbial elephant Miriam mentioned in the video.
Be sure to read to the end, I’ve got a little GIFT to help you wash Mr. Elephant down a little easier…lol!
TIP #1: Map it out
The scariest thing to me when starting on a new journey is the UNKNOWN. I’m not a detailed person, by nature. I am what some call a CREATIVE. For me, this means I’m the girl to come to for IDEAS, CREATIVITY, etc. I leave the details to others, more qualified. Now of course, for what I do, I am forced to research and plan, but for the most part.. I rely on others to do the heavy lifting (can I get an AMEN?)
I know this about myself because I have taken the introspective time to learn myself and find my value. I also know that when I start on a journey towards something new, I need to map out the steps to get me there. This keeps me on task and helps me re-center when necessary.
TIP #2: Where Blinders
We are NOSY BY NATURE (like that play on the group “Naughty by Nature” don’t cha!). We want to know what other people have done or are doing to grow their business and then we believe we can do the same thing if we copy steps just right. Well I’m sorry to tell you ladies and gentlemen, it’s not true! Your business is your business, so put your blinders on and focus on the value YOU bring to the table and how to create your own Circumstances for Optimal Success. If you heed to this advice, that ugly comparison game we tend to play with others is kept to a minimum.
TIP #3: Suffer for Success
Okay, this isn’t what you think it is. What I mean is…. Do the hard work to give yourself more time in your day. I recently started researching the habits of highly successful people and a thread that continues to run through my research is: Successful people get up early. In this article the NUMBER ONE THING LISTED SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE DO IS GET UP EARLY.
Now do you see what I mean by SUFFER for SUCCESS? Getting up early isn’t my favorite thing to do, but I will tell you this… since I’ve been doing it, my productivity has skyrocketed!
If you’re anything like me, the mere thought of setting an alarm clock for 5:30am is CRAZY!!! The truth is, some successful people get up EVEN EARLIER (craaazzzyyy!!!). I believe the key to training yourself for this habit is to take your time and do it OVER TIME (i.e. get up 15 minutes earlier each week until you reach the time you need to be more productive with your goals, have something planned to do when you get up earlier, get an accountability partner).
Now it’s your turn. What are some tips you have for making the transition from career to entrepreneurship? What advice can you give to others looking to pivot in their business or start another business?
